Bifold vs vertical vs card holder: which wallet should you carry?

By [Author name], CipherPublished 4 min read

Choose a classic bifold if you keep notes flat and carry several cards in a back pocket, a vertical bifold if you want something narrower for a front pocket, and a card holder if you carry a few cards and little cash. Long wallets suit a jacket pocket or a bag.

What is a bifold wallet?

A bifold folds once down the middle, like a book on its side. Opened, it shows card slots on one or both sides and a full-length pocket that holds notes flat. It is the most familiar shape: wide enough for cash without folding it, slim enough for a back pocket. The trade-off is width, and a bifold carried with a dozen cards gets thick at the fold.

Our Fold is a classic bifold. See all bifold wallets.

What is a vertical bifold?

A vertical bifold also folds once, but along its long side, so it opens top to bottom and stands taller than it is wide. Cards usually sit in stepped or curved slots you can thumb through, and notes are folded once. Because it is narrower than a classic bifold, it suits a front pocket or a shirt pocket.

The Vertical opens like a book, with curved card pockets and a full-height pocket for notes.

What is a card holder?

A card holder is a flat sleeve with a few slots and no fold. It carries your two to six most used cards and a note or two folded small. It is the slimmest option and the easiest to forget you are carrying, which is the point, but it is not built for a stack of cash or receipts.

The Sleeve adds an ID window; the Snap closes with a snap flap over folded cash. See all card holders.

Where do long wallets fit in?

Long wallets hold notes completely flat, with room for cards, receipts and ID. They are made for a jacket pocket or a bag rather than trousers. If you carry a lot of cash or like everything in one place, start here: see long wallets.

How many cards do you really carry?

Count them before you choose. Most people use three or four cards day to day: a bank card, an ID card, perhaps a second bank card and a work pass. Everything else can live at home. Choosing a wallet for the cards you actually use is the simplest way to carry less.
