How to care for a leather wallet

By [Author name], CipherPublished 4 min read

Caring for a leather wallet takes a few minutes a few times a year. Empty it, brush off the dust, wipe marks with a barely damp cloth, let it dry away from heat, then work in a thin layer of leather conditioner. Done every few months, this keeps the leather supple and stops cracks at the fold.

Why does a leather wallet need care?

Leather is skin. It keeps natural oils in its fibres, and those oils are what let it flex thousands of times a year at the fold. Heat, sweat, rain and dry air pull the oils out. When they go, the leather stiffens, the grain opens up and cracks start where the wallet bends. A few minutes of care, a few times a year, keeps that from happening.

How do you clean and condition a leather wallet?

Set aside half an hour, most of which is waiting. You need a soft cloth, a soft brush and a leather balm.

  1. Empty it and brush off the dust. Take out your cards, cash and receipts. Brush the seams and pockets with a soft, dry brush or cloth to lift dust and grit before it works into the grain.
  2. Wipe it with a barely damp cloth. For marks, use a soft cloth wrung out until it is almost dry and wipe gently. Never soak leather, and avoid household cleaners, alcohol and baby wipes: they strip the oils that keep it supple.
  3. Let it dry naturally. Leave it open at room temperature, away from heaters, hair dryers and direct sun. Fast heat shrinks and stiffens leather and can make it crack along the folds.
  4. Condition it lightly. Rub a pea-sized amount of leather balm or conditioner into a soft cloth and work it over the leather in small circles, folds and edges included. Test it on a hidden spot first, because conditioners can darken leather slightly.
  5. Buff it and let it rest. After about 15 minutes, buff off any excess with a clean, dry cloth. Leave the wallet empty for a few hours so the leather can absorb what it needs.
  6. Store and carry it well. Do not overfill it, keep it out of plastic bags so the leather can breathe, and give it a rest from a tight back pocket now and then.

How often should you condition a leather wallet?

Every few months is enough for most wallets, and more often if the leather starts to look dry or pale at the folds. Climate matters: in the dry heat of a Lahore or Multan summer, leather loses its oils faster; in humid Karachi, it needs less conditioner but more air. For Cipher pieces we suggest a thin layer every [x] months.

What should you never use on leather?

  • Soap, washing-up liquid, alcohol or baby wipes, which dry it out.
  • Petroleum jelly or cooking oil, which can go rancid and stain.
  • Direct heat to dry it, including a hair dryer or a sunny windowsill.
  • Too much conditioner at once: a thin layer soaks in, a thick one sits on top and stays sticky.

What if your wallet gets wet?

Take everything out, blot it with a dry towel, and let it dry open at room temperature, slowly. Once it is dry, it may feel stiff: a light coat of conditioner brings it back. Do not put it away damp, especially in humid weather, or mould can form in the pockets.

How do you stop a wallet from stretching?

Carry what it was made for. Card slots cut to hold one or two cards each will stretch to fit four, and they do not shrink back. If your wallet is bulging, it is time for a clear-out or a piece with more room, like the Long or the Field.

Does leather change colour with age?

Good leather does. Light from the sun and the oils from your hands slowly darken it and give it a soft shine, called a patina. A tan wallet like the Vertical will be noticeably richer after a year in a pocket. That is the leather ageing well, not wearing out.
